Fashion retailers Asos, French Connection and Aurora Fashions report online growth

Asos today unveiled sales growth of almost 40% in its latest financial year.

The online fashion retailer today said that sales in the year to August 31 grew by 38% to £537.9m, while in the final three months of the year they were up by 31% at £141.0m.

UK sales showed buoyant growth in that final quarter, coming in 15% ahead of last year at £49.8m, while international sales grew by 42% at £91.2m. The faster growth of overseas sales was reflected in the news that international sales now account for 65% of its total revenues.

Chief executive Nick Robertson said: “Our sales performance in those markets where we have a website continue to outperform.”

Meanwhile fashion retailer French Connection said its ecommerce business had “continued to perform well and has grown significantly,” as it reported half-year revenues of £96m, down from £102.8m last time, and pre-tax losses of £6.3m, from a profit of £0.7m last time.

The company said it was introducing click and collect during the second half of the year and that it would give consumers the option to return products bought online to stores.

Elsewhere, Aurora Fashions said it had taken its multi-brand website approach to two new markets. Tabulated websites that operate as a one-stop-shop for the Coast, Oasis and Warehouse brands have launched in Sweden and the Netherlands. French and Spanish sites will launch later this year.

“Our online only approach is proving very successful in many countries, allowing us to capture and grow market share without the need for a physical presence,” said Mike Shearwood, chief executive of Aurora Fashions. “This next phase in our international strategy further cements Aurora’s position as a true omnichannel retailer, in which we strive to identify the best fit approach for each market.”
