Home delivery: is it where your heart is?

DeliveryX

There’s a lot of focus on what’s round the corner – the next-big-thing phenomenon, referred to here just a few weeks ago. And rightly so. After all, new services are the lifeblood of a successful business in a competitive market.
But it wouldn’t do to turn your back on the fundamentals, or lose sight of what’s important.

Which is why this month we’ll be taking a closer look at where it all started in the multichannel world – home delivery. Click-and-collect was last year’s belle of the ball, and we all love the hype of drones and car boots. But home delivery was the genesis of most of what the industry now concerns itself with; from failed delivery to fixing the last mile through innovative technology.

We have a report from JDA and Centiro which looks at, among other things, shoppers’ appetite for fast delivery in the form of same-day and next-day services. There’s not a lot of love for them compared with other priorities, it would appear.

MetaPack has been looking at this at a more granular level, as part of a series of infographics it is producing. The latest of which looks at what 25-34 year olds want where delivery is concerned.

And one of the giants of the enterprise software world, Oracle, has published its Delivering Retail 2015 report, in which we find what happened when it asked 350 retailers across 10 sectors 100 questions to assess how they are living up to the delivery promises they make, what options they offer, and some of the costs involved. If you like charts, this one’s definitely for you.

Later in June, we’ll be running interviews with some well-known figures who have careers steeped in home delivery expertise, more analysis, and opinions from readers and industry names alike.

If you haven’t yet subscribed to eDelivery why don’t you embrace change and go and do that right now? You’ll get our weekly newsletter summarising the main stories we’ve covered, and we’ll keep you informed of other big announcements, but we won’t spam you – that’s not how we stroll. You’ll find details on that here.
