New figures from French and Spanish statistics agencies have revealed considerable growth in the two countries’ ecommerce sectors.
The latest barometer from French ecommerce association Fevad said that France’s ecommerce turnover in the third quarter was €24.6 billion, up 11% year-on-year. Sales on marketplaces increased 11% from Q3 2018.
The number of online transactions rose 14.2% to reach 426 million transactions in the quarter.
Fevad noted that the number of online buyers is rising as the number of merchant sites fall. This helped to offset a 3% decline in basket sizes to €58. Frequency of purchase continues to grow with the average person undertaking 12.5 transactions in the quarter, up 8% year-on-year.
Looking ahead to peak, the association predicted Christmas sales and promotional campaigns in November could exceed €20 billion, reaching nearly 20% of annual sales.
Boosted by peak, Fevad predicted overall sales for 2019 could hit €100 billion.
Meanwhile, figures released in October from Spain’s Institute of National Statistics found that the proportion of online shoppers in the population (defined as percentage of people who had shopped in the last three months) had risen 8% year-on-year to reach 47% of the population.
