Supermarket Morrisons is working to consolidate its supply chain and logistics operations, with warehouse manager roles at its seven distribution sites set to be reduced with a five-over-seven working week reinstated from April.

Documents seen by The Grocer detail how Morrisons plans to consolidate the number of warehouse manager roles at each site to a single operations manager role. It will also remove team manager roles in its ambient supply chain, reduce roles in its chilled chamber and reduce the number of managers and co-ordinators working within canteen teams.

Under current plans 279 jobs could go, but the supermarket has warned further redundancies can not be ruled out. It has stressed it will seek to offer workers alternative roles if possible. The consultation process will run until 21 April.

Its Scottish Bellshill site is the only not affected by the proposals, as it is run by a third party.

“As part of our ongoing plans to speed up and simplify the business, Morrisons has today announced the start of a consultation programme on some changes to the operations and people teams across seven logistics sites excluding our Bellshill site,” a Morrisons spokeswoman told The Grocer.

“The proposed restructuring will lead to a more responsive and simpler structure that will be better able to support our retail operations seven days a week.”

Last summer, DeliveryX reported that Morrisons would consolidate some of its sites, with its Bradford packing plant set to close in the second half of 2023.

Morrisons said it planned to transfer the work to its fruit packing plant at Thrapston, Northamptonshire and its distribution centre in Wakefield – creating 400 new jobs at those sites. However, over 450 jobs at the closing Cutler Heights Lane facility were be put at risk.

This closure and latest restructuring is part of Morrisons £700mn three-year savings programme.
