Online sales now account for more than nine per cent of UK sales at Majestic Wine, the wine warehouse said today.

Majestic said internet sales rose by 8.3% in the first half of its financial year to the point where they now account for 9.1% of UK retail sales.

The company said: “Customer behaviour online and expectations of what a website should deliver are constantly evolving. We work hard to entertain and interact with our customers when they visit the website and have substantially improved the content that we publish online.” Website features include a Grape to Glass blog, written by staff.

The update came as Majestic, which also owns fine wine specialist Lay & Wheeler and Wine and Beer World, today announced total revenue of £117.6m in the 26 weeks to September 27, up by 10.2% compared to £106.7m at the same time last year. Like-for-like UK store sales rose by 7.6%. At the same time pre-tax profits rose by 20% to £7.3m from £6.1m last time.

Since the end of the period, in the six weeks from September 28 to November 8, like-for-like sales have risen by 7.4%.

Chief executive Steve Lewis said: “I am delighted that Majestic has achieved profit growth of 20% in the half year and I am very encouraged we have been able to attract so many new customers.”
