Domino’s Pizza says the use of ecommerce as a method of ordering its deliveries has grown at a “breathtaking” rate. The company today reported a 43% rise in online sales to £183.1m in its latest financial year. They now account for 44.3% of deliveries, up from 35.8% of sales last time. Sales over a mobile device made up 14% of internet transactions.

Reporting its results for the year to December 25 Domino’s Pizza UK and IRL said total system sales for the year rose by 9.3% to £530.7m, while pre-tax profits rose by 10.9% to £38.8m, from £35.2m in the previous year. Adjusted profits, before the impact of its loss-making German operation, stood at £43.5m, up by 14.6% on last time’s £38.0m.

“The rise of ecommerce in our business has been breathtaking,” said chief executive Lance Batchelor, presenting his first set of results in the role, “and we are now regularly taking around 50% of our orders online, with daily sales far in excess of the million pound mark.

“A growing number of stores take over 75% of their orders online and it is a channel that Domino’s continues to dominate in the quick service sector. This provides added benefits for our franchisees through reduced labour costs and increased order accuracy.”

During the year the company acquired a master franchise agreement for Germany, where it plans to treble its six stores during the current financial year. Across the group, 62 new stores were opened during the year and the company has also trialled new store formats, including one in a Tesco superstore, one in a shopping centre and one in a motorway service area.
