Muji is bringing mobile checkout to its 11 UK shops.

The retailer is using MishiPay’s Scan, Pay, Go solution, allowing shoppers to scan an item in a branch of Muji and pay for it on their smartphone. That means they can shop without needing either to queue or to visit a checkout.

The Japanese household and consumer goods business says the technology makes social distancing easier, while also leaving staff free for more important tasks.

David Brice, managing director at Muji UK, said: “The in-store experience for customers has always been an important part of the Muji brand, and MishiPay’s mobile self-checkout solution has allowed us to create a new level of convenience. Not only are customers enjoying being able to check out without queuing or touching hardware, but our staff are also more free to help, advise and add real value to the shopping experience rather than processing payments.”

Retailers already using London-based MishiPay’s mobile checkout include Decathlon in Germany and BWG stores in Ireland but this is the first use in the UK. Customers do not need to download an app to use the solution, which can be integrated into existing payment and back-office retail systems.

Mustafa Khanwala, founder and chief executive of MishiPay, said: “After our recent successful launches with retailers across Europe it is exciting to see MishiPay now being used in Muji’s stores in prime retail locations around the UK. Muji are dedicated to creating simple, enjoyable customer experiences, so we have been delighted to work with them to roll out a solution that improves both convenience and safety for their shoppers.”

Muji is a Top500 retailer in RXUK Top500 research. It was founded in Japan in 1980 as a brandless retailer offering good value items, and now has 11 shops in the UK, in London, Manchester, Guildford and Birmingham.
