Waitrose says its online channels played their part as the supermarket chain hit total sales of £5bn for the first time.

Waitrose’s 243 stores and channels including Waitrose.com, other online services, food halls and business partners all contributed to the milestone achievement, achieved at 3.45pm on Saturday January 29 following an increase of 6.4% in total sales for the week.

The company said growth had been driven by a “rollcall of investment and innovation.”

Managing director Mark Price said: “Five billion is a fitting finale to a year of growth and consistent outperformance of our industry. Achieving this milestone is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the 44,000 partners who work at Waitrose.”

A fund equivalent to £5 per person has been set up for staff at the company to celebrate the achievement.
