Pandora and Chanel warnings to customers after latest cyber attacks hit retail

Pandora and Chanel have become the latest retailers to fall victim to a cyber attack, it was revealed this week. Pandora customers received emails warning of a breach.

The attacker is reported to have accessed details via a third-party platform used by Pandora and stolen what the jewellery retailer described as “very common types of data”. This includes name, birthdate and email address.

Security measures strengthened

In an email to customers, Pandora said it has since strengthened its security measures and that no passwords, credit card details, or other confidential data were involved in the incident. It said that having carried out extensive checks, it couldn’t find evidence that the data had been shared or published.

However, the company warned customers to beware of unusual emails or other suspicious requests for data and apologised for the inconvenience.

Chanel customers also warned

In the US, Chanel also informed customers of a data breach yesterday. It said the breach was first detected on July 25, with similar details to Pandora stolen.

Several retailers have been hit by cyber attacks this year, including M&S, Co-op and Harrods. The most devastating of these was for M&S, which had to suspend online trading in April after it was attacked. M&S is expecting a £300m hit to annual profits as a result of the attack for which four individuals – including three teenagers – were arrested in July.

A new report from Globaldata this week found that one in five consumers were considering changing their online shopping habits as a result of concerns about cyber attacks.
