PostNL is expanding its zero emissions delivery programme to more cities in the Netherlands after a successful pilot.
The programme, which first launched in 2017, sees business goods being stored at SimplyMile’s hub near the outskirts of a city. PostNL then delivers them to the city centre through an emission-free option such as electric cargo bikes and electric vans.
The initiative will expand this year from Amsterdam to Groningen, The Hague, Maastricht, Utrecht and Nijmegen.
Next year PostNL plans to add a further 10 cities, with the overall aim being to have zero emissions delivery in 25 inner cities by 2025.
Rogier Havelaar, PostNL’s city logistics director: ‘PostNL wants to be the favourite delivery person in the Benelux and would like to be at the forefront of zero-emission distribution. We have committed ourselves to this by signing the Green Deal Zero Emission Urban Logistics (ZES).”
PostNL revealed last month that more than half of its revenue now comes from ecommerce in its Q1 results as it outlines new plans to capitalise on this growth through “innovative solutions” such as automation. Revenue increased to €684 million, up 1% year-on-year.
The company has recently expanded a parcel locker programme in the city of Tilberg.
