Primark has become the latest UK retailer to increase staff wages, with a 9.1% boost from 01 April.

The fashion chain, and RXUK Top500 retailer, will raise the average rates for all staff across England, Scotland and Wales to £12, with London employees receiving £12.56.

The pay rise applies to its 27,000 store employees following the news last year it was scrapping its age-related pay rates for under 23s.

“Our colleagues do a brilliant job every day serving our customers and we want everyone to be fairly rewarded and recognised for their hard work,” said Kari Rodgers, Primark UK retail director.

“We hope this pay increase goes some way towards demonstrating our continued thanks for all that they do in our stores and for our customers.”

Additionally, Primark has invested further in its self-service checkouts. First introduced in 2022, the fashion retailer has now installed the technology in a seventh location. Customers in Sheffield, Northampton, West Bromwich, Kingston, Milton Keynes, Basingstoke and now Stockport can self-serve.

Holly Eaton, manager at Primark, said: “Welcome to our future! As well as served tills we now have new self-serve. We are super excited to allow our customers to flow through store quicker and conveniently. We are proud to also say this means more amazing smiley faces will be on our store floor.”

In February, Primark announced that it plans to invest £100mn in its UK stores this year, as it marks 50 years since opening its first store in Derby. As well as offering a self-service checkout in some locations, Primark has also extended its click & collect offering after a successful trial last year.
