Sainsbury’s to launch online fashion marketplace

Sainsbury’s is set to launch its own online marketplace for high street fashion, in a bid to diversify its product offering.

According to The Sunday Times, the Big 4 grocer is pitching to brands including Jigsaw, White Stuff and Yours Clothing.

It is also offering flexible terms of conditions with these brands, alongside lower commission rates compared to John Lewis, which charges at least 40%.

The move is headed up by former John Lewis managing director Paula Nickolds, who leads Sainsbury’s non-food business, alongside Christine Kasoulis, the supermarket giant’s director of clothing, home and furniture.

Kasoulis stepped down from John Lewis in 2021 after 32 years within the business.

In her position, she was responsible for bringing more than 50 new fashion, beauty and accessory third-party brands to John Lewis’ online and in-store line-up.

The move follows the Big 4 grocer announcing it partnered with fashion retailer Sosandar. As a result, selected ranges will begin to be sold via Sainsbury’s during this year, initially online only, but with selected stores planned.

Last month, Sainsbury’s also reported a 13% drop in online sales as a result of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and rising inflation.
