Sainsbury’s uses mobile scanning to speed up in store purchases

Sainbury’s is piloting a scan and go purchasing offering that allows customers to scan items as they shop using an iPhone/Android app and then pay without having to unload their trolley or bags at the till.

Mobile Scan & Go is the first of its kind in the UK and is being trialled in three stores in Bethnal Green, Clerkenwell and Tadley, with a limited number of opted in customers. Once they have downloaded the app, the user registers using their Nectar card and details of the store in which they want to shop. They can then log into the app when they want to use it and scan barcodes on goods they are buying as they put them in their trolley.

When customers are ready to pay for their goods, they are asked to scan the ‘Check out’ QR code located at the store’s self-scan or manned tills. 

Luke Jensen, Sainsbury’s group development director explains: “We’re always looking for ways to enhance the shopping experience for our customers. Our innovative Mobile Scan & Go technology is fantastic for those wanting to manage their budget or simply those who want a quicker in-store experience.”
