Significant moments in the history of ecommerce and multichannel retailing

Anniversaries run through today’s Internet Retailing newsletter. First, Net-A-Porter reports that in its fifteenth year in business it’s returned to profit. Just as significantly, we report on the 10th annual Internet Retailing Conference where the mood is set to be one of reflection on the decade of ecommerce and multichannel retailing gone by – and of preparing for a future which is bound to be full of surprises. Net-A-Porter shows in its results the power of innovation. That’s what Majestic Wines’ new chief executive Rowan Gormley is also looking for, as the company puts in place IT systems that will underpin new ideas and approaches.

In an age where mobile and online are now taken for granted by consumers, as new Google data illustrates, retailers and town centre managers will be looking to their own kind of innovations that give the high street a new role in an omnichannel world. That’s what Helen Dickinson of the BRC says is necessary to revitalise city and town centres.

In today’s newsletter we also report on Amazon’s move of its UK corporate headquarters to London. Today’s guest comment is from Cecile Reinaud of Séraphine, who argues that collaboration is the new face of competition.
