Tesco shoppers who order before 9am can now pick up their groceries from midday onwards.
This extends an existing service that sees customers order by 1pm for pick up from 4pm, and will be available from more than 300 sites across the UK, Monday to Saturday.
The move comes as more of the supermarket’s shoppers use click and collect to pick up their groceries. In the last year the number of people using the service has grown by 20% – with 10% of all such orders picked up on the day they were ordered.
Adrian Letts, managing director of online at Tesco , said: “More customers than ever are choosing to use our grocery Click and Collect service which is we’ve decided to introduce a new same day collection slot.
“We offer a range of ways to shop with Tesco and Click and Collect means customers can choose to pick up their shopping at a time and location that suits them, without having to hit the aisles themselves.”
In London and the South East, the retailer is also offering same day home delivery.
The same day click and collect service is free to customers using its subscription-based Delivery Saver, or costs up to £4, depending on the time and day of collection. Next day click and collect costs up to £2.
Our view: With a focus on same day delivery in London and the South East and on click and more widely, Tesco is taking the fight to Amazon . The online giant has offered same-day grocery delivery to Amazon Prime members within parts of London since last summer – but lacks the infrastructure to offer click and collect services. Tesco is competing by ensuring that its service is at least as convenient as that of Amazon, and even more so in the sense that click and collect is a popular option for people who can’t be at home to take delivery of their order – or don’t want to carry it home from their office.
