Home, garden and leisure retailer The Range is set to install solar panels on the rooftops of its warehouses, in a bid to save on energy costs and help it become a net zero business.

Starting with its warehouse in Ashford, Kent, The Range will utilise 4.2m sq ft of rooftop for solar energy. Power generated will be used by The Range at this site and others, with any surplus sold to nearby large energy buyers.

The Range believes the introduction of solar panels could reduce its electricity bills across the portfolio by at least 25%.

Alex Simpkin, CEO of The Range, said: “We’re on a journey to become a net zero business.

“Our partnership with InRange is a real demonstration of our commitment and has really sped up our efforts, meaning we can already see immediate benefits for both us as a business and as a positive impact on our local communities.”

The discount retailer has partnered with InRange, a managed marketplace for enterprise renewable energy procurement, to accelerate its solar rollout and connect with buyers.

John Mushriqui, CEO of InRange, added: “It’s refreshing to see one of the UK’s largest retailers have the ambition to leverage their buildings as a retail energy network.

“It’s our mission to accelerate the roll out of onsite generation to their portfolio and achieve their ambitions.”

The Range is not the only retailer using its warehouse space for cleaner energy sources. The soon-to-be published DeliveryX Warehousing 2024 report looks at the role warehouses have to play in retailers sustainability efforts. It includes an example of Dunelm’s solar panel acceleration.

The coming-soon report also features exclusive interviews with B&Q, Pets at Home and Furniturebox.
