DW Sports in administration, with more than 1,700 jobs at risk

DW Sports went into administration this week, putting 1,704 jobs at risk, as it became a casualty of the Covid-19 lockdown.

Dave Whelan Sports, listed Top1500 in the RetailX UK Growth 2000 index, shut down its website immediately following this week’s announcement. Visitors to its website are advised that orders already placed will still be sent out though returns must be made by post.

Fifty shops continue to trade and administrators from BDO hope to save as many jobs as possible by selling all or part of the business as a going concern. Closing-down sales are now running across all of the 50 shops that are open, with all products now discounted. Some 25 shops closed before the administration came in place.

DW Sports also operates 73 gyms of which 59 have reopened in England and Northern Ireland. Fourteen in England, Scotland and Wales are set to reopen when it becomes possible under local Covid-19 guidance.

Graham Newton, BDO business restructuring partner, said: “The well-publicised challenges for the retail and leisure sectors from the impact of Covid-19 have significantly affected DW Sports’ business. However, we are continuing to trade while we explore the sale of as much of DW Sports’ business as possible.”

The administrators say that anyone interested in finding out more about the potential acquisition should contact them at projectzinc@bdo.co.uk.
