Women of all ages are turning to to the internet and online retail to make their money stretch further, according to new research.

Asda’s latest Mumdex report questioned 5,500 mothers of all ages found that 85% of grandmas aged 60 and over and almost half of the over-70s had used the internet and digital apps to save money.

It also found that nine in 10 younger mothers were going online to save money by shopping around. More than 70% of those questioned owned a smartphone, and 78% of those aged between 20 and 29 had recently shopped online using a smartphone.

Two-thirds of all respondents had also used the internet to change their energy, home insurance or bank provider. Three quarters were using online banking to monitor household expenses. And 41% had cooked from scratch using online recipes.

Hayley Tatum, executive people director at Asda, said: “Mums of all ages are now turning to technology when it comes to managing the household budget. It’s refreshing to see that smartphone apps and comparison sites are not exclusive to the younger generation and in general mums are feeling much more optimistic as they find effective ways to make the pound in their pocket stretch further.”

The study comes as Asda, which releases fourth quarter trading figures on February 20 is reported to have said its gimmick-free Christmas strategy had led to strong trading online and in its stores. Some 4.8m customers are said to have visited its stores on December 23, while records were also set as online grocery sales passed the £5m milestone on December 21 and 22. Some 28% of December home shopping sales were made through a smartphone app, it said.
