Nine of Amazon.com’s 10 bestsellers are digital products, the company has reported.

Amazon.com, releasing its first quarter results last night, said that the Kindle Fire was its number one bestselling product on its US site and that Kindle readers were also the bestseller on the company’s UK site, which is the UK’s biggest online retailer. The same is true in Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

The other bestsellers on Amazon.com included Kindle books, films, music and apps.

Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said: “I’m excited to announce we now have more than 130,000 new, in-copyright books that are exclusive to the Kindle Store – you won’t find them anywhere else. They include many of our top bestsellers – in fact, 16 of our top 100 bestselling titles are exclusive to our store.”

The update came as Amazon.com unveiled sales up by a third in the first quarter of its financial year.

Sales in the three months to March 31 grew by 34% to $13.18bn (£8.13bn) the company said last night, up from $9.86bn (£6.08bn) at the same time last year.

But net income was down by 35% to $130m (£80.19m) in the first quarter, from $201m (£123.98m) last time. However since this was better than had been expected by the markets, share prices rose in response to the news.

Amazon’s international sales, which include the UK site, grew by 31% on last year, to $5.76bn (£3.55bn).
