El Corte Inglés has announced it is introducing new search tools for online customers, including the ability to search for products through a smartphone camera.

The department store’s new feature allows customers to upload images to the search bar, either found online or taken via their camera.

In addition, customers will be able to use customised discover, which serves personalised recommendations to customers based on their interests or needs.

The feature makes use of Alibaba Cloud, Alibaba’s data intelligence unit. The two companies plan to work together on other initiatives in the future.

Víctor del Pozo, CEO of El Corte Inglés, added: “Alibaba Cloud offers some of the most advanced cloud-based technologies and solutions for retail, and we’re very excited to be working with the global leader on the next stage of our digital transformation.

“The deployment of Alibaba’s AI and cloud driven Image Search and Recommendation Engine, could present our customers with a top-level online retail experience, which will continue to give us a competitive edge to maintain our lead in retail across Europe.”
