68% of shoppers expect to see more sustainable delivery options in future, while 63% say they are important or very important: study

Most shoppers expect to see more sustainable delivery options become available in the next year, a new report suggests. 

In all, 68% of 1,000 respondents to an IMRG/Scurri Last Mile Delivery Report said they would expect to see more sustainable delivery options in 2023, while 21% were unsure and 11% did not. When asked how important sustainable delivery options are to them, 22% say they are very important, and 41% important – and only 4% say they are now important. 

Eco-friendly packaging was the sustainable option that won most backing from respondents (55.7%), followed by using environmentally friendly vehicles (50.9%), and recycling old or unwanted items (34.5%). 

The largest group (41%) would not want to pay extra for sustainable delivery, although those answering ‘yes’ (21%) or ‘sometimes’  (29%) added up to 50% of respondents. 

Customers also they they want more delivery options at the checkout – with 26.6% often shopping elsewhere when their prefer option was not available and 40.5% sometimes doing so. 

Asked at what level of minimum spending they would expect free shipping, 27.4% said they would do so for a spend of between £20 and £30, while 24% expect it when they spend between £10 and £20, and 13.1% expect free shipping when they spend between £30 and £40. 

Aske whether they would be prepared to pay for same day delivery from their favourite retail brand, the largest group would spend up to £2 (24.7%), and the second group would not be prepared to pay at all (24.4%), followed by a third group who would pay between £2 and £4 (21.4%) while 18.5% would pay between £4 and £6.
