Ocado has begun trialling zero emissions vehicles for its same-day delivery service in west London.
The trial, which began on 28 January, involves electric vans, electric-assisted cargo bikes and pedal-powered cargo bikes. The bikes use new refrigeration technology which extends their range to 50 miles, allowing more orders per trip.
Customers of the service can choose from 10,000 products online and can choose a delivery slot either as soon as possible or later the same day. The minimum order spend is £15, with a typical delivery cost of £2.99.
The company plans to open several more sites around London by 2025, extending the offering to more customers.
George Dean, Head of Ocado Zoom said: “We’re really excited to see a new generation of vehicles out on the road.
“We’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and being the best neighbour we can, whilst delivering groceries to our customers as fast as possible. This trial is an important step in what I hope will be a rapid expansion of our non-emitting fleet.”
Ocado has a long-term plan to reach zero emissions by 2035.
