Tesco has launched a new rapid delivery service that will deliver groceries within an hour. Although currently a one store trial operating from its Wolverhampton Willenhall Express store, the retailer will assess the potential for rollout as the trial develops.
Customers in selected postcodes near to the store can order on-demand via Tesco’s app or via its website. Products are then delivered by bike, moped or car with a £5 delivery charge.
A number of grocery retailers already operate on-demand service, many of them through companies such as Deliveroo. The Co-op, for example, first started trialling home delivery from a number of its London stores in 2019 with Deliveroo. Aldi meanwhile launched its first delivery service with Deliveroo in June last year, quickly expanding the service during the pandemic.
Tesco had previously launched a one-hour delivery service in partnership with Quiqup, via its Tesco Now app, in London in June 2017. That service allowed customers to order up to 20 items from a range of 1,000 products, picked from a local store and delivered via moped.
Chris Poad, online managing director at Tesco, said: “Customers are telling us that they would welcome the addition of a 60-minute delivery to their door option as part of our online grocery service. We’ll use the pilot to understand how Whoosh could work best for both our customers and our colleagues.”
