A changing picture of how we shop in the 21st century

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’ve some fascinating insights into how ecommerce and multichannel retailing are changing the way we buy. A report from the ONS suggests that although shops still dominate retail, the retailers we buy from online are now less likely to have their own shops.

Meanwhile, we’ve taken an analytical look at announcements this week from Amazon, Domino’s Pizza and Just Eat to see what they tell us about the way that people are now ordering food, whether that’s takeaways or groceries.

All this adds up to a fascinating picture of a world in which online is increasingly important for its convenience, as demonstrated through mobile ordering and through speedy delivery. If ecommerce has been a great disruptor of the way we buy, then new and disruptive technologies have been hard on its heels. At this year’s InternetRetailing Conference we’ll be hearing from James McClure of AirBnB about the way he sees marketplaces changing in future.

Today we also report on how the John Lewis Partnership has teamed up with TrueStart to give other technologies a chance to prove themselves in the retail context.

Today’s guest comment comes from Teresa Zobrist, of Zobrist.com, who takes a look at best practice omnichannel retailing. Finally, we report as Furniture Village launches a new responsive website.
