Alibaba to roll out ChatGPT rival

Alibaba Group

Alibaba has announced plans to roll out its own artificial intelligence (AI) program, Tongyi Qianwen, to rival ChatGPT.

Tongyi Qianwen, which translates as “seeking an answer by asking a thousand questions”, will be integrated across the business in “the near future”.

However, the Chinese technology company did not give details on its timeline.

Earlier this year, Alibaba revealed it was working on a rival to ChatGPT.

The software will be initially added to DingTalk, Alibaba’s workplace messaging app, alongside being implemented into voice assistant smart speaker, Tmall Genie.

According to the company, the software is capable to perform a number of tasks including turning conversations into written notes, as well as drafting emails and business proposals.

“We are at a technological watershed moment driven by generative AI and cloud computing,” Alibaba’s chairman and CEO Daniel Zhang said when Tongyi Qianwen was launched.

The software is also capable of working in English and Chinese.

The news comes as buy-now-pay-later tool Klarna recently announced it had built a plugin for ChatGPT, enabling the AI-powered bot to provide customers with personalised product recommendations upon request.
