Amazon to open eco-friendly logistics centre near Madrid


Amazon is opening a new logistics centre near the Spanish capital as it seeks to expand its presence in the country.
The centre will be located at an industrial state in Alcalá de Henares, 30km from Madrid.

Set to open at the beginning of autumn, the facility is built to the BREEAM certification for low energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Recruitment has begun for an eventual 500 roles at the site, including engineers and IT teams.

Amazon said the site will be used for storage and order preparation, allowing the company to expand its product selection and expand the Amazon Logistics operation for SMEs selling through the site.

Stefano Perego, VP of Amazon Customer Fulfillment in Europe, said: “We are proud to expand our network of operations with this new logistics center in Alcalá, the second in the Community of Madrid.

“This centre is a clear sample of our commitment to Spain, creating more than 500 permanent jobs in the next three years, which will help us reach even more clients throughout the country. We continue to invest heavily in Spain, employing thousands of people talented people who receive a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.”

Perego said: “Since we started our commercial activities in Spain in 2011, we have invested more than 2,900 million euros in infrastructure and facilities, transport and shipments, as well as wages and benefits for our employees. In addition, we have also committed to invest in renewable energy as a critical step to combat our carbon footprint worldwide.”

Amazon’s first logistics site in Spain was San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), which began operating in 2012, one year after the launch of Since then it has opened three logistics centres in the Barcelona area and one near Toledo.

It recently announced a new site at Dos Hermanas near Seville.
