Amazon reveals first commercial delivery by drone in UK

Amazon yesterday revealed that it has completed its first commercial delivery via drone in the UK.
The company released a video that showed the process and revealed that the package arrived at its destination in Cambridge 13 minutes after it was ordered. The company is hoping that all orders made using its drone service Amazon Air will be delivered within 30 minutes.

The delivery, which took place on 7 December, was delivered from the company’s Cambridge fulfilment centre and included an Amazon Fire TV box and a bag of popcorn. It flew to a height of 400 ft before delivering the package, though Amazon did not reveal how far the product had to travel in the process.

Amazon will extend the trial to further customers living close to the warehouse in the coming months – reportedly ‘dozens’ initially before rolling out further.

The drones, which are guided by GPS, are capable of carrying items of up to 2.7kg in weight.
