Who is the metaverse targeted at today, how many people are actually using it and where is that likely to go in the years ahead?
The metaverse is currently more a set of ideas that are slowly starting to find their early adopters. The true picture of what the metaverse will be depends upon who uses it.
The surge in interest in the metaverse can be seen as a direct result of the pandemic. The lockdowns enacted around the world in 2020 forced more people online and those already there to dwell longer – in 2018 the average person in the UK spent 3 hours 11 minutes online, by 2020 that was at 4 hours and 2 minutes.
