Pontus Kristiansson, CEO of online merchandise specialist Avail Intelligence, gives four tips to online retailers how to achieve more success with their m-commerce solutions. “It’s not enough to transfer the stationary webshop to the smartphone screen. Online retailer must have a strategy and consider whether a mobile presence will bring the desired success.”

Following Kristiansson’s four tips may help.

1. Use personalization software: Prioritize personal recommendations

Mobile shoppers are looking for the most relevant product and follow trustworthy recommendations. The Swedish bookshop Bokus has achieved great success with its new iPhone app which sends personalized recommendations to mobile potential customers.

2. Take design restraints into account

The smartphone screen is much smaller than a normal PC display. Compress rich media content to the absolute minimum, shorten texts and avoid unnecessary user input. This way the convenience of use is highest.

3. Provide appropriate payment methods

Shopping mobile makes some customers very reluctant to divulge their personal financial data. Therefore e-retailers should chose their e-payment method carefully and inform their customers about the high level of security this method provides.

4. Mobile sale offers

One of the motives for shopping mobile is to save time. If customers could also save money they would be even more willing to purchase with their smartphone. M-commerce retailers should take advantage of this behaviour: Offer products or services which are available for only a limited time.
