Change is in the air as retailers adapt to the new reality of how we shop

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’re reflecting on how retailers are changing as they look to meet the needs of increasingly demanding consumers. When Brantano, for example, went into administration in January, administrators put the business failure down to a need to adapt to the way shoppers are buying now. Today we’re reporting that it’s been bought back by its previous owners, though with a smaller store estate. We’ll be watching with interest to see if that move from 200 to 140 stores is enough of a change to make Brantano a going concern in the future in a world where consumers are indeed doing more of their shopping online.

Then Darryl Adie of Ampersand investigates another likely change in an exclusive piece of guest analysis. By February 23 we’ll know if Sainsbury’s is going to pursue plans to acquire Argos. Adie asks whether the combination will add up to a British Amazon. Today we also report on Hammerson as it changes and develops its multichannel services to meet the needs of shopping centre visitors, and on research that demonstrates why this change is necessary – because shoppers will go elsewhere if it doesn’t happen.

We interview Paul Kendrick of Bonmarché in today’s IRX 2016 preview, while today’s guest comment, with tips for retailers on making the most of social commerce, comes from Rene Looper of social media training company Tuminds.
