Consumers want green delivery options, says survey

Retailers could be at risk of losing customers if they don’t offer green delivery options, according to a new study.
The survey by Doddle found that 43% of UK consumers were more likely to shop with a rival retailer who offered a greater range of sustainable delivery options.

This rose to 56% amongst 18 to 24-year-olds compared to 40% of those over 45.

In addition, 13% said they think about the environmental impact of different delivery options ‘a lot’ when they make their choice while 40% said they’d be more likely to opt for alternatives to home delivery if a retailer provided information on the emissions for each available option.

Fifty percent of consumers said they would like to only support retailers offering a wide range of sustainable delivery options, rising to 60% amongst 18 to 24-year-olds.

Tim Robinson, CEO of Doddle: “As shoppers continue to become more environmentally conscious, retailers need to mirror this in their offer. While convenience remains important for customers, it’s not enough for sustainable delivery to be an add-on or after-thought anymore – in an already tough environment, it will set brands apart in their battle for customer loyalty.

“With a quarter (26%) of consumers actually surprised by how many of their favourite brands still only offer home delivery, retailers need to make alternatives like click & collect, consolidated deliveries and store kiosks more prominent at checkout and be explicit about the environmental benefits.”

The research polled 2196 consumers across the UK in March 2019.
