The MSc in Internet Retailing has received strong interest in its second year. The course, run by InternetRetailing, Econsultancy and Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School, combines current, commercial best practice in multichannel retailing with a rigorous, portable and globally recognised academic qualification. IMRG has recently endorsed the programme (see below) as have students, sponsoring businesses and industry figures.

Information here. Register your interest and apply here. Deadline is July 16****

Whether you are thinking of the MSc as a way to develop your own career in multichannel retail, or as a way to develop and stretch the very brightest and most promising within your team, the MSc has shown its value in creating the leadership cohort for tomorrow’s multichannel retailers.

Our combination of commerce and academics has proven a potent one, with our first cohort of students setting new standards in their studies and at work.

Viv Underwood, who manages the MSc programmes at Econsultancy, notes:

“2009’s IR intake is off to a flying start, with a recent exam board making special mention of the exceptional standard of work achieved to date. 2010 looks set to see an equally high calibre intake joining the programme; representatives from organisations such as Reckitt Benckiser, Ovum, Vodafone, Stibo Systems, House of Fraser and Salmon are already signed up, and the breadth of experience promises a lively and insightful group.”

The 2010 intake has been increased to cope with the additional interest, but there are now only six places left in this extended group. This is therefore effectively the last call for you to read the info, consider, chat to us and still manage to get your application to us in time for July 16…

Endorsements for the MSc in Internet Retailing

2009 Students’ views

Thomas Parrott, MD of Thane Direct, was in the 2009 intake. He says:

“As managing director of a business in the process of building its e-commerce presence, the MSc in Internet Retailing offered me the opportunity to achieve the insight and knowledge I need to drive change within my organisation. After just one term, I have gained a thorough understanding of the complex issues surrounding e-commerce, and an increased confidence when planning and discussing developments with both agencies and internal teams.”

Becky Olie, head of web selling at House of Fraser, and also in the 2009 intake, says:

“I believe the future of retail is non-existent without a clear cross-channel vision, and having the MSc under my belt puts me in a much stronger position to take on a senior leadership position in the future. I was particularly attracted to this course because of the strong commercial focus, so the work I do as part of the programme is directly impacting my day-to-day activity. Having the support of both industry experts and a group of like-minded professionals with whom I can share my ideas (and frustrations!) has been absolutely invaluable.”

The business’ view

Peter Callaway, director of e-commerce at House of Fraser, supports Becky Olie’s study on the MSc programme. He notes that the MSc programme “is adding significant value to the in-house team and [the] academic work is feeding directly into the online business strategy. It’s a great way to integrate academic learning with real-world commercial requirements.”

Alison Lancaster, ex Marketing Director at and John Lewis Direct, and now marketing director at White Stuff and other clients noted:

“I am delighted to support and promote the MSc in Internet Retailing. It’s a unique qualification in our industry, designed to significantly raise the competency bar. The course enables organisations and individuals to train and gain practical, expert knowledge and in-depth learning and understanding about our fast moving, dynamic industry, helping develop a quality source of talented trading stars for tomorrow. With the rapid growth of online and multichannel retail over the last 15 years, there is a shortage of suitably qualified internet and multichannel retail traders. If multichannel retail success is all about excellence in trading execution – from strategy, to brand, product and customer proposition and delivery – then this course provides world-class in-depth training and mentoring of all the required elements to inspire, educate and motivate the internet and multi channel leaders of the future.”

Industry support extends to the industry trade body, IMRG. Its founder and chief executive James Roper said:

“At IMRG we’re focused on developing the skills, capabilities and professionalism in our young and dynamic industry, as well as extending the recognition of the multichannel skills within the wider market. We’re pleased to support the MSc in Internet Retailing and welcome the blend of current, commercially-focused training with recognised, portable academic qualification. In our work we seek to develop the next generation of retail leaders via knowledge, research and insight and the MSc programme is a valuable contribution to that. We look forward to working with the team on the MSc to ensure its ongoing relevance to the future of our industry”.
