DPD opens largest purpose-built DC to date

DPD has opened its largest distribution centre to date at EuroCentral near Glasgow.
The 70,000 sq ft distribution centre has been purpose-built for the parcel delivery company and can process more than 45,000 parcels a day. It is DPD’s 31st purpose-built new depot since 2012 and joins DPD’s two existing Glasgow depots at Cambuslang and Tannochside.

The EuroCentral DC will enable DPD to further optimise delivery routes around Glasgow and the Central Belt, with 117 new routes introduced to improve efficiency and ensure the operation can handle the parcel volume growth predicted in the area through to 2025.

The site has already created 65 new jobs and is likely to total 200 when fully operational. DPD recently reported a 40% year on year increase in weekend parcel volumes as well as continued growth in volumes the rest of the week.

Dwain McDonald, CEO of DPD said the new DC showed how fast the company has grown. “The new DC is stunning and it is both our biggest ever depot and our most technologically advanced. We’ve gone from 36,000 sq ft new-builds back in 2012 to over 70,000 sq ft here today. Doubling the size means we not only increase our capacity overnight, but we’ve also got room to carry on growing,” he said.

The company is also about to start work on its second giant SuperHub in three years at Hinckley in Leicestershire.
