eBay fashion app gets augmented reality make over

Want to check whether this season’s sunglasses suit your face (ahead of the balmy summer we are no doubt not going to get)? Well, help is now at hand as eBay.co.uk has updated its Fashion App to include a new augmented reality (AR) feature, so shoppers can now virtually ‘try on’ sunglasses before they buy.

The “See It On” Sunglasses feature is easy to use and helps mobile shoppers – or, to use eBay’s own witty portmanteau ‘moppers,’ – find the perfect look using augmented reality, which overlays the image of the glasses onto the face of the shopper. The user simply uses the pinch and zoom features of the iPhone to size the specs and/or the head to fit.

A technique pioneered by opticians’ online websites over the past few years and more recently embraced Grazia magazine and London Fashion Week – which have both embraced the trend of overlaying digital data, including video, on the real world, with 3D covers, 360-degree view photo shoots and interactive barcodes – AR is now seen as a key tool in the mobile remote buying environment.

For eBay, the “See It On” Sunglasses function is the latest addition to a host of features on eBay designed to help any budding bargain hunter make the most of high street looks, including, :a Personalised Closet to view your favourite fashion finds in one place, an Outfit Builder enabling you to try on items virtually and a virtual style gallery showcasing the latest trends.

Fashion lovers have been flocking to eBay mobile apps, snapping up 13 pieces of clothing, pairs of shoes and accessories every minute worldwide.
