Editorial: Balancing the cost of delivery

DeliveryX

Following on from our opinion pieces from Debenhams and Doddle on the power of click and collect in our newsletter last week, comes the news that Doddle is now to roll out the service across Debenhams entire estate by Spring next year. It follows the incremental sales that the service has delivered for the retailer, as well as the improved customer experience for shoppers.

The latest IMRG MetaPack Delivery Index meanwhile shows that the normal slump in deliveries during the summer didn’t happen as customers opted for delivery rather than collection during the heatwave. Order values also rose for July.

Transport costs are at risk of a record high in the second half of this year following a rise in diesel costs, according to a new report from Capgemini Consulting. It shows the importance of balancing the costs of delivery versus pushing for cheaper options such as click and collect.

Celebrating a year since launch is Whistl Fulfilment. The division has announced expansion plans and the appointment of a new commercial director.

One company not celebrating is Royal Mail. It was fined £50 million for discriminating against Whistl and Ofcom is now investigating the delivery sector as a result.

Royal Mail’s software arm meanwhile has launched a new shipping tool for large retailers to help them fulfil complex orders.

Finally, we have news of Amazon which has signed up Panther Logistics as a delivery partner for next-day delivery of furniture in the UK.
