In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter we take a look at two retailers expanding in different ways. Full year financial results reported today by home appliances retailer AO emphasises its refocusing on the UK market while expanding the consumer electronics and small appliances categories.
Meanwhile, Frasers Group continues its expansion online with a bid for MySale. It has a stake in the Australian private sales group already and this will give it a base from which to grow its other businesses into the region.
We also take a look at how one of the most buoyant retail sectors, sports, has scored big in the past year, with a drill down into the latest RetailX EMEA Sports Goods Sector report. Here we take a look at how the sector has performed under the twin pressures of Brexit and Covid, to find an industry that faced with its core demographic being locked inside had to rapidly adapt what it sold to a new way of living.
As we see, the sector did just that and out of it has created a whole new segment – athleisurewear – which along with some clever marketing around yoga pants, managed to see the sector through.
This week we take a look at how the sector has adapted, how its key players have performed and take a look at two of them – Decathlon and Sportsmaster – to see how different businesses tackled the tough climate in new and innovative ways. We also hear from Benoit Gourdon, President, EMEA at Botify in this week’s Guest Comment about just how SEO optimisation of any large ecommerce site can increase website traffic.
