Editorial: Technology key to meeting customer expectation


Technology has proved a major theme this week as innovation helps to improve accuracy and allow businesses to better deliver on customer expectations.
UPS announced that it was to use beacon technology within its package vehicles in an effort to avoid mistakes that are simply down to packages being loaded on the wrong vehicles in a move which it believes could cut the need for rerouting by up to 70%.

The thirst for new technology options was also highlighted at eDelivery Expo recently. Speaking at the show Peter Ward, CEO of UKWA, said that those 3PLs leading the market were the ones who were embracing technology to allow them to keep up with customer demands and expectations.

Many retailers are turning to the efficiency of the cloud to deliver technology benefits and at peak this is especially beneficial, according to MetaPack’s David Jack in this week’s opinion piece.

At FedEx, as part of the company’s latest pledges on driving fuel efficiency, the company has revealed plans to increase fuel efficiency by 50% by 2025.

Meanwhile delivery specialist Hermes has revealed it’s the latest business to partner with Starship Technologies to test its autonomous robot delivery solution.

And finally comes the approval by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) of the Technical Specification (TS 17073) for Postal services – Interfaces for cross-border parcels which should help to enable one item label for the delivery of merchandise to end customers.
