Editor’s column: Groupon speaks, Asda leads, and 1 billion parcels are heading your way

It is now a mere three weeks until eDelivery Expo (EDX 2015) gets under way on 25 March at the Birmingham NEC. When I was first told about the two day event, at which the great and the good of the industry will meet, speak and network, it seemed like it was a very long way off in the future. Not anymore.
Continuing our series of interviews with some of the great speakers we’ve got lined up, this week we hear from Luke Massery, VP and General Manager of Groupon. We’re thrilled to have Luke joining us and he’ll be giving the opening keynote on Day One, 25 March. What can the retail sector learn from a market disruptor like Groupon, and vice versa? There’s only one way to find out.

Meanwhile, Asda are taking the lead within the Walmart group when it comes to home shopping. A new centre of excellence opens in Leeds later this year, where a team of experts will be based with the aim of helping their colleagues overseas develop bigger and better ecommerce ideas. If you ever wanted proof that the UK leads the way when it comes to this sort of thing, there it is.

Elsewhere on eDelivery, could 2015 be the year that the total number of parcels shipped across the UK hits 1 billion? According to the IMRG/MetaPack UK Delivery Index it might. One billion is a very big number, obviously. But reflect for a moment on just how big – if you counted to one million, it would take you about 10 days. But if you counted to one billion it would take you something like 40 years. One billion parcels, eh? That’ll take some shifting.

Perhaps its no surprise then, to learn that the UK is already a big hit with Norbert Dentressangle. In its recently-announced financial results, the UK was highlighted as the French company’s second largest market.

Another carrier riding high this week is FedEx Express, who got named as one of the UK’s top employers, by the Top Employers Institute no less, for the fifth year running.

As I said at the start of this column, we’re less than a month away from our expo, EDX 2015 now. We’re hoping to catch up with as many of you as we can, so do try to come and meet some of the team. We’ll be out in force on both days, 25 & 26 March, and we’re a very approachable lot.

You’ll find more info on EDX 2015, including details of how to register, here.
