From the Internet Retailing Awards 2014 to the rise and rise of mobile in the digital mix

We’re starting to get excited about the Internet Retailing Awards party this Thursday. In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter we hear from not one but two finalists shortlisted for the awards on what they are doing to make their businesses stand out in a digital age. They are Doug Glenwright of Tui Travel on why digital store design matters, and Dressipi founders Sarah McVittie and Donna North on how and why their service works in creating confident consumers who are three times as likely to buy. We’re also delighted to announce the three winners for Venda’s ‘Scratch and Tweet’ competition – congratulations to Vic Watson, Emily Barun and Rob Le Boutillier.

Beyond the party, there’s a certain m-commerce flavour permeating today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, where today we report both on a study that forecasts mobile payments will overtake transactions made on laptops and desktops this year for the first time, and on news that 44% of British shoppers now use mobile to browse retailers’ websites. It’s a fitting theme in the week that the UK debut of Google Glass was announced, with a starting price of £1,000. The Guardian has already explained how it will be using the wearable technology, and we’ll be waiting with interest to see what retailers will do with it – and how soon transactions over such devices start to show up in the research.

Small wonder then that retailers from Sainsbury’s, unveiling its new multichannel website, to Carpetright, which has its full-year results out today, are now routinely explaining how mobile fits into their digital strategy.

Last but certainly not least is the news of Asos’ swift recovery from the fire that closed its warehouse over the weekend. Read on for news of our events, webinars and shared resources.
