From the past to the future of connected retailing

We’re looking to the future and the past of ecommerce and multichannel retailing in today’s InternetRetailing newsletter.

We remember the early days of online retailing in an interview with Howard Wallington and Simon Pounds of Barclaycard, as they think back to the Barclay Square years, when we neither expected to have an email address or to shop online.

And we’re looking to the future of connected commerce from a variety of angles. We consider the Amazon Flex service, and how this might change the way we expect to take delivery. We’re also anticipating the launch of a new kind of connected retailer, as Sainsbury’s gets the go-ahead for its acquisition of Argos. And we’re looking to a post-Brexit world with the news that AO World believes its sales will hold up despite the vote to leave the referendum.

Along the way, we report on how shoppers spent more online in June, according to ONS figures. Today’s guest comment comes from Steve Sponder of Headstream, who considers what the difference is between merchandising and content marketing.
