Bakery chain Greggs has revealed plans for a new national distribution centre to increase its supply chain capacity, as its store network grows further.

The new site, in Kettering, is expected to be fully operation in 2027. The planning application indicates the centre will feature 311,551 square feet of logistics space on a 25.1-acre plot. Developer Tritax Symmetry is also seeking planning permission for an additional 100,000 square feet of space to enable Greggs to expand the site further.

Additionally, the distribution centre will be designed to a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard, and will meet net zero carbon in construction requirements.

This latest move, which follows the announcement of a new state-of-the-art frozen food manufacturing and logistics facility in Derby, is part of Gregg’s ambitious growth strategy. The retailer is looking to expand its estate from 2,500 stores to over 3,000.

A new report looks at how critical distribution centres and warehouses are to retailers.

The DeliveryX Warehousing 2024 report, which is available to pre-register for now, harnesses RetailX research and features three retailer interviews.

The report hears from Pets at Home on how its new distribution centre fits into its next decade of growth. The founders of Furniturebox explain why its facility is key to an 8pm next-day delivery cut off.

Additionally, the report – which will be delivered to your inbox upon release – covers how Boots has introduced warehouse robotics to work alongside employees.

Exploring the potential of warehouse roof space for solar panels, this coming soon report also highlights Dunelm’s energy plans.
