Hermes is set to open a new depot in the north of England.
The new purpose-built site at Wingates Estate, Bolton, will open in autumn 2021.

It will replace an existing nearby site, handling nearly three times as many parcels at 220,000 per day.

Carl Lyon, COO at Hermes UK, said: “The pandemic and lockdown restrictions have expedited the already significant growth of online shopping and we are continuing to make bold investments to ensure we can continue to meet current and future demand. Bolton is a key location for us and forms a vital part of our growing infrastructure.

The announcement comes as Hermes shared data about parcel shipments in 2020, a year where the Covid pandemic drove a huge number of shoppers online.

The courier’s shipments grew 66% year-on-year in 2020 to 630 million. Volumes doubled year-on-year in April, May and June, while they grew 71% in the period between Black Friday and Christmas Eve.
