How digital is evolving as customers adapt to online

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we report on a clutch of companies that are hoping to change the way we shop online – again. First up is Amazon, a business that has of course already changed the way we shop. Today we report on its new marketplace for 3D printed products, which can be personalised as each item is made to order.

Then Argos today boasts that its latest catalogue has the most extensive use of augmented reality yet seen in the UK, with no fewer than 300 extra ways to explore its pages now available to smartphone and tablet users. We also watch with interest as Domino’s Pizza Group says it expects mobile to overtake online, becoming its most popular ordering channel in 2015. The growth of such devices has brought a sea change to the way we order food in recent years.

Today we also report on Next as it raises profit expectations in the wake of strong sales, both online and off, and on Fine + Rare, the wine merchant, as it adopts a new platform for international and multichannel growth. We also have news of growing grocery-related searches, according to new data from the BRC and Google, and on a Micros study that shows more retailers are now selling overseas, and that the service they offer has improved.

Our conference

Our next big event is the Internet Retailing Conference, to be held on October 14 at the Novotel, Hammersmith, London. Keynote speakers confirmed so far include Mark Lewis, online director, John Lewis, Andy Harding, executive director, multichannel at House of Fraser, and Jérôme Cochet, senior vice president sales at Zalando. The conference takes the theme of Re-foundation, and will be keynoted by retailers who have led transformation within their business as their product sector or the retail landscape have evolved.
