How retailers and logistics companies lived the Christmas experience

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’ve learned that 31% of online shoppers came up against some sort of problem when buying online this Christmas. That’s hardly surprising in a time when peak demand rose dramatically. But with this in mind we were interested to hear this week from leading multichannel retailers on the issues they experienced behind the scenes this year. Sainsburys, Boohoo.com and Majestic Wine all said the discounting fever caused them issues at Christmas when they reported on Wednesday, while on Thursday, Tesco, Ted Baker and Dunelm all reported fast growth in online sales, but Marks & Spencer said its ecommerce business had been hit by distribution disruption. Today we also report on the big story of Christmas – delivery – with reports from those who mapped demand on how the logistics evolved this year.

Today, our round up of 2015 predictions and trends focuses on the customer experience, while today’s guest comment, from Rob Harper of PayPal, considers how businesses can win in the digital era.

Our webinars

Our first webinar of 2015 comes from dotmailer, whose group account director Lili Boev will explore why potential shoppers abandon shopping carts – an average 68% of all online retail shopping carts are left before a purchase is completed – and how to craft strategies to make the most of those abandoned carts and convert lost browsing sessions. The free webinar, A sense of abandonment?, takes place at 2pm on January 27. To find our more and register, visit the dotmailer webinar page.
