IKEA has introduced an update to its IKEA Place app which allows customers to receive interior design advice.

Introduced in 2017, the app previously allowed customers to use augmented reality to place furniture in their homes.

It will now allow customers to receive home furnishing tips and recommendations, which will be curated based on the customer’s behaviour and context. Customers can define areas they want to furnish, with the app automatically suggesting possibilities.

Customers will also be able to point their smartphone camera at furniture and automatically find the most similar IKEA product.

The update is available on iOS devices and will be brought onto Android in the near future.

Gerry Rogers, digital transformation leader at Inter IKEA Group, said: “Sometimes we all need that little bit of inspiration that sparks new ideas. That’s exactly what we want to achieve with IKEA Place.

“In the bigger perspective, IKEA Place is not about AR or AI. It’s about making IKEA home furnishing expertise more accessible. To do so, we are looking into the newest technologies, not for the sake of technology, but to create a better everyday life for the many people.”
