UK sales on Asda.co.uk could overtake Tesco.com within six months if consumer trends continue, MyVoucherCodes has predicted this week.
The voucher site is basing its prediction on an analysis of search and sales statistics on its website.
In July 2009, sales data collected through MyVoucherCodes gave Tesco a majority share of online grocery shoppers, with 41% of supermarket sales going through Tesco.com compared to 27% via Asda.co.uk.
But sales figures throughout January 2010 demonstrate that Tesco is losing the lead to Asda, the company says, with a share of 36% and 31% respectively.
"Both Tesco and Asda have fantastic online offerings, making it easy for consumers to find and buy their groceries online," says Mark Pearson, managing director of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk. "It is a small wonder that these two are the ones vying for the top spot on the basis of their services."
"Since we have kept records, Tesco.co.uk has always been the dominant online supermarket brand," he added. "It is my belief that Asda's marketing, which is constantly playing itself off against Tesco as the UK's cheapest supermarket, is strengthening their brand, and despite the fact that we've now joined the list of countries no longer in the recession, British consumers will continue to use the Internet to find the best ways to save money."
"I predict that come June 2010, if consumer trends continue, Asda will be the dominant online supermarket," he concluded.
