International export in focus a week after Brexit vote

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’re mulling the importance of international export for retailers of all sizes, a week after the Brexit vote.

The current weakness of sterling has presented many online retailers, particularly those with effective international strategies, with an opportunity. Goods on sale in sterling are suddenly cheaper than they were two weeks ago – and today we report on how Gear4music has seen a significant spike in its like-for-like European sales since the referendum.

This may be a short-term opportunity. Prices may start to rise as retailers then to buy in stocks from outside the UK. But those who can focus on exporting British sourced goods will see that opportunity last for longer. It’s in that spirit that we report today on how Waitrose is targeting new global customers through its well-timed tie-up with the British Corner Shop, and how Superdrug saw a lift in online sales in a year in which it started to deliver to Ireland.

We also bring insights into the thinking of senior European multichannel and ecommerce retailers in areas from operations and logistics to strategy and innovation in latest report from last week’s InternetRetailing Europe Summit.

The future is another theme on the minds of the retailers we’re reporting on in today’s newsletter. We have news of how House of Fraser is looking to reimagine the future of the store.

Today’s guest comment comes from Andrew Fowkes of SAS UK and Ireland, who considers the role of analytics in brand loyalty and pricing.
