Intersport has introduced a new football specialist store concept, as it pursues a personalised and hyperlocal approach to match the needs of consumers in its 42 markets.
The first of these football focused stores opened in Athens on 27 March, as Intersport Greece introduced its new 1,200 square metre football store.
Designed as an immersive experience and community hub for local football fans, the store includes features such as an indoor football field, an interactive video football-wall, and a dedicated gaming area. This is in addition to a specialised selection of football equipment from a range of top global brands.
The roll-out of this new format is initially planned in Europe, with a target of launching 10 to 20 stores. Further openings are already planned for 2026.
Intersport Football stores are part of the retailer’s Category Specialist store formats, alongside other pre-existing specialty stores, such as for Running and Rent for Wintersports.
“We are extremely excited to officially launch this new specialist store format, reinforcing our status as a truly multi-category sports retailer,” said Stephan Schwarz, general manager for Category Management at Intersport International Corporation GmbH.
“This represents our ongoing efforts to keep Intersport at the core of local communities and the heart of sport.”
Intersport is one of the largest sports goods retailers in the world but stands out from the crowd thanks to being a collective of individual sports goods retailers that work together to create a huge, powerful whole.
Founded in 1967 in Switzerland by a range of individual sports sellers across Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden, and Switzerland, its success is rooted in this unique business model, which allows member stores to benefit from collective purchasing power, marketing support and shared expertise – while also reaping the more personalised approach of being individual stores.
