Joules has expanded the number of payment options it offers online to German customers as it looks to increase sales from the market.

The fashion retailer, which trades online and through more than 70 shops, now offers options including payment on account, electronic direct debit and automated bank to bank transfers on its German website. Such payments are traditionally popular in the country: in 2012 a study by market research company Forsa found 58% of German online shoppers preferred to order online and then pay afterwards by invoice. Meanwhile just over a third (34%) of shoppers use credit cards.

Joules has used technology from Computop to power the new range of options. Payment processor Computop will also process all Joules’ card payments around the world.

“On deciding that we wanted to expand our payment footprint internationally we began a journey of discovery, speaking to a number of payment service providers about the options open to us,” said James Davey, director of ecommerce at Joules. “We chose Computop’s Paygate 5.0 solution because it enables Joules to dramatically expand the payment options available for our overseas customers and in particular for markets like Germany where alternatives to cards are preferred by consumers.”

The company is also using tokenisation and fraud protection tools from Computop.

Ralf Gladis, chief executive at Computop, said; “There have been significant developments in the German payments market recently that has made payment on account a more attractie option for international retailers. A number of open invoice companies like BillPay and Klarna will now guarantee payment on behalf of the consumer, subject to a credit check and mitigate the risk of default for the merchants. Thishas encouraged British retailers to consider Germany – and its 41m online shoppers – as a key strategic market for expansion.”

Computop Paygate is a PCI DSS certified payment platform giving retailers access to more than 60 payment methods.
