Keep the balance: why stores and online both matter in retail

Rain did not stop shoppers heading to stores over the Easter weekend – although where they headed was affected by the downpours, we report in today’s InternetRetailing newsletter.

It’s more evidence that shops offer customers something that online does not entirely fulfil. That’s something that InternetRetailing staff writer Sasha Fedorenko explored when she visited a new-look Sainsbury’s last week. What’s notable in her account is how retailers continue to bring digital technologies into the store in order to make the physical shopping experience more satisfying and convenient.

This comes as online evolves to provide ever more ways for shoppers to buy. Today we consider the opportunities – and the challenges – that shoppable Instagram can offer retailers. And we report as Shop Direct adopts new technologies to improve customers’ online experience, and safety.

We also report as Nish and Sach Kukadia take back control of SecretSales.com, the flash sales business they founded back in 2007. Today’s guest comment comes from Erhan Musaoglu of Logiwa Corp, who considers five things every retailer should do when managing their inventory.
